Coade Stone Flora Water spout
A stunning wall plaque would have initially been the ornamental aspect of an architectural key stone - the origin of which was most definitely from the Coade Stone Factory. Eleanor Coade (1733-1821) was the creator of the Coade Stone Factory at Lambeth - London. Developing a unique process with moulded stoneware (a cross between earthenware and porcelain) - to resist all the elements through a long firing. The accurate secret of the process sadly went with her to the grave. The Coade Stone Foundry was accountable for many extraordinary monuments - as well as the striking lion at Westminster Bridge and the larger lion outside the all England Rugby Club at Twickenham. They were commission for stoneware from around the world together with restoration work at St Georges Chapel at Windsor Castle in 1780 and asked to create the monument to Lord Nelson - at the Royal Naval Hospital - Greenwich.
